Somalia (the Federal Republic of Somalia) is an Eastern African country known by many for its poor living conditions, endless civil wars, and piracy. But is there more to Somalia than that, and is it possible to travel to this country? Let's find out.
Somalia's location in the Horn of Africa and form, resembling a tilted "seven", makes it the country with the longest coastline on the African continent. This means a great amount of beaches, so there is definitely at least some tourist potential. Today's population is estimated at 18.1 million, over two of which live in the capital city of Mogadishu. This ancient port city is well worth visiting, as it offers visitors stunning Italian and Arabic architecture and is considered the most important cultural centre of the entire country.
Besides Mogadishu, Somalia has plenty of notable natural places of interest. The most famous are the Laas Geel caves, where one can see Neolithic (over 5,000 years ago) rock art. Others include majestic mountain ranges: Cal Madow, Golis Mountains, and Ogo Mountains. Due to the abundance of wildlife (many rare mammal species, 727 bird species, 235 reptile species, etc.) Somalia maintains four national parks, all of which are excellent safari spots: Hargeisa, Jilib, Kismayo, and Lag Badana.
Despite all those reasons for visiting Somalia, its current political instability and poor living conditions force us to join those who don't recommend visiting it yet. For now, the risk you may encounter there is too high compared to the benefits you get if you visit unless you decide to travel via a reputable travel company that cares about your safety around the clock. Even in this case, follow Somalia's rules and customs, for example, those connected with religion, Islam. Somalia's strive towards a better future and the resilience of its people enable us to say that this destination is likely to become a potential hidden gem for those ready to venture off the beaten path.
