Christmas Island, an Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean, is located 350 km (190 nmi) south of Java and 1,550 km (840 nmi) from Australia. The island's area is 135 km² (52 sq mi), and the population is 1,692 people (as of 2021). The first settlement on Christmas Island was established by the British in 1888. British influence still prevails today, though many Chinese, Indians, and Malays live there. The island is celebrated for its unique and abundant flora and fauna. Despite guano mining done in the past, rainforests covering almost the whole territory remained in excellent condition. In 2021, nearly two-thirds (63%) of Christmas Island's land was made a National Park. The island is rather popular among those enjoying nature walking - for this, there are plenty of walking trails. Multiple beaches, caves and different types of water recreation also attract visitors to Christmas Island.
