Iran, officially known as the Islamic Republic of Iran and historically as Persia is a West Asian country. In terms of area (1,648,195 km² or 636,372 sq mi) and population (about 90 million), Iran ranks 17th globally. It is divided into five regions and 31 provinces and is awash by the Caspian Sea in the North and the Indian Ocean in the South (the Persian Gulf).
Iran is known as the cradle of civilisation, having been inhabited around three million years ago (the period called Lower Paleolithic). The country contains 28 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which makes it the 10th in the world and fifth in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage (human treasures).
Although many governments advise against travelling to Iran due to safety reasons, this ancient country has a great deal of exciting landmarks and traditions. Let's name some of the human treasures Iran is rich in: Abadeh wood carving, Kapu Bafi plaiting, Sistan and Baluchestan embroidery, Persian carpets, Kalash or Giveh shoemaking, and many other arts.
Iran is a deeply religious country, with Muslims comprising almost 95% of the population. Combined with the government's conservatism, you should consider a number of rules when visiting the country. If you do so, Iran will surely reward you with spectacular historic sights, elaborate crafts, and indigenous culture.
